Interesting, and as a heathrow runway 3 nimby perhaps my opinions are biased.  On the other hand as a frequent flyer perhaps they're not.  I'm not sure if every person living under the heathrow flight paths has been directly asked their opinion or not.  No one's ever asked me.

The opposition to the third runway isn't just 'locals', it's something in the region of a million people who are slightly miffed that politics and the so called interests of the nation as a whole outweigh the detrimental effect on us.  1 million firmly against, 62 million don't really have any opinion and about 100,000 in favour.

Heathrow of course is perhaps the last major airport in the whole world that still runs it's flight paths directly over the countries capital city, and in so doing subjects a disproportionately large number of people to pollution, noise and safety issues.  Safety because the CAA calculate that at current traffic levels, an airliner will land on hounslow once every 37 years instead of making it all the way to heathrow.  Pollution is of course at an almost continuous illegal level in Brentford as well as much of west london.  Airliners generate a lot of it. As for noise, well double glazing is nice, but we all have it anyway and on a hot day it's quite nice to actually open a window every once in a while

The jobs line is a bit of a con. It's far, far fewer than you might think and they're all generally at minimum or minimum-plus salaries.  You'd get a lot more jobs if you redeveloped the site to something that didn't involve a thousand acres of concrete runways.

Where else to put heathrow?  How about Gatwick.  Any crashed planes, pollution and noise will affect predominantly a lot of fields full of cows.  Transport links to Gatwick are exactly the same as Heathrow.  Cost of Gatwick expansion is less than Heathrow.  Benefit to the economy is exactly the same.

But hang on, Gatwick is owned by a different company to Heathrow.  Not good for the Spanish owners of Heathrow if it doesn't expand, so perhaps that's where the fundamental driver is?
