Ah yes, the cafes and bistros of Paris, my personal fave being Cafe George V on Champs-Elysees which tried to entice me with a glass of orange juice for 14 euro afew years back, leading to a swift departure once I saw the menu.

Back to the issue at hand, the reality (in my view) is that pubs are now over-protected.  Most local plans adopted by Councils in recent years have policies which protect pubs.  In Hounslow for example you won't get permission to change a pub into someone else unless the pub has been closed and actively marketed for at least 12 months.

And there's also the powers to now gets pubs designated as assets of community value, which are increasingly being used.

Personally speaking, I think there's still too many pubs, as with the retail sector the world has completely changed in the last 20-30 years (not necessarily for the better) and instead of trying to over-protect the relics of the past world we should be more embracing of what markets, be they retail, leisure or entertainment, are telling us.

Obviously the Great British boozer has it's place/role to play, but not to the extent it did in the past.
