I have just received the latest leaflet from Hounslow Conservatives in Osterley, which demonstrates the rather pathetic husk the local Tory party has become. Nearly half of it is devoted to trying to whip up physical support for the party, and the single political issue on it is the fact that Labour has quite sensibly added a £2m VAT refund to council reserves to increase council funds in future years and thus guard against the possible cuts coming to vulnerable services like libraries. The Tories object to this and say the money is better off in ' residents' pockets'. How on earth can they then criticise any possible service cuts like the closure of Osterley Library when they quite clearly think public services should be kept to a minimum and taxes given back to residents? I would like to see Conservative Leader Peter Thompson answer this question - should the Libraries budget be axed and libraries closed in order to give residents a council tax refund? |
