I cannot believe that moronic individual of the London Assembly is urging Boris to ensure Mogden expansion goes ahead to the detriment of Hounslow and Richmond residents when he clearly has no idea of the facts. Talk about ignorant of the real situation. Does he not realise that if a child continuously throws its toys out of the pram you don't simply buy a bigger pram. Such is the situation with Thames Water. They had the chance to expand Mogden in 1999 to treat more sewage and they failed miserably. Instead of reaching the target for which they applied of 810 Ml/day they only achieved EA consent to treat 690 Ml/day and even now they are using storm tanks when they are only treating 400 to 500 ml/day. They only have to discharge into the River Thames when all storm tanks are full but they are filling the tanks well before they need to. Tracey says he thinks millions of Londoners will be appalled to learn that huge quantities of sewage are poured into the River Thames each year. Yes they probably would be appalled - but the sewage wouldn't need to be poured into the Thames if Mogden was run efficiently. Tracey says he "knows why this is happening: investment to expand the water treatment works at Mogden has been delayed, which means that when there is a storm surge the current infrastructure is unable to cope and consequently the river is used as an overflow sewer." Absolute rubbish - investment hasn't been delayed - its simply under scrutiny because the site is so badly managed and is subject of a group litigation alleging negligence. Tracey says "it’s vital that this investment goes ahead to ensure the standards that people believe are already in place are maintained" Again total rubbish - it is vital that this expansion does NOT go ahead because it would simply be pouring good money (from taxpayers) after bad. What IS vital is that the Mogden operation and management of the site is judged in the High Court of Justice (now delayed by Thames Water until February 2010) so that all evidence is made public. Tracey says "What Londoners want to know from their Mayor is that he is using his influence to ensure that Thames Water maintains its investment programme so that this horrible situation becomes a thing of the past.” Wrong again Tracey - What Londoners want to know from their Mayor is that he is using his influence to ensure that Thames Water is held accountable for its failure of the last expansion program and that it explains why it is using storm tanks and discharging raw sewage into the river when it is not processing sewage well below its planned daily flow of 810. Until it can explain this and until it can convince the mayor that it can run the site properly and employ qualified chemical engineers on site, it should divert the flow, it is unable to process, to another of its many sites. |
