| The Alton Arms is listed on the Historical Directories web site in the 1853 Mason's directory. It was run by George Dimmock, a horse dealer. The 1851 census shows a George Dimmock, beerhouse keeper and horse dealer living at (what I think would eventually be) no. 179 High Street. By 1871 this was the Watermans Arms.
