Looking at Wandsworth, they had one (One day I think) purge where they collected them up and looked to charge Lime for retrieving them, Whether they succeeded I don't know. They seem to be threatening to do the same once more.https://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/news/news-march-2023/council-continues-to-take-action-on-lime-bikes-blocking-pavements/ They are also proposing to provide bays as we have done a while ago in Hounslow. We have had extensive Limes in Brentford and Chiswick for several years. Councils have no powers to stop them anyway and the introduction of bays in Hounslow was to solve the largely imaginary problem that existed before. In the 3 or 4 years they were in Brentford I had one complaint for a resident. When we introduced the bays we had a torrent of complaint, though by and large that has abated. The fact of the matter is (as Angelo remarked) they are widely used (more than 50000 trips per month in Hounslow Borough) and provide a convenient way of getting around for many people. I think they are expensive so have only used them a few times. According to Lime 95% of bikes are 'parked' correctly, ie within the bays. I am sceptical about that but there are some bays which are very heavily parked and that may affect the statistics. I did do a test a few months ago and found I got told off if I tried to leave it somewhere unofficial. They say they fine you if you do and there's some kind of 3 strikes and you're out rules. For me, they were no problem until we started trying to manage them - they were more convenient to use and caused very few problems. |
