Gunnersbury used to be in Brentford ward which I represented but it has been moved by the Boundaries Commission into a new ward - Chiswick Gunnersbury. I used to engage closely with events in Gunnersbury - repeated meetings with the organisers, the management team for the park, local residents, council officers. I remember being in somebody's garden in Lionel Road who had a noise monitoring device placed in his garden by the noise consultants the council had asked them to place around the area. I also remember cycling around the perimeter of the park when it was on and finding very little noise except down near Chiswick roundabout. I was surprised to hear later that the noise had spread to parts of Grove Park - quite a long way from GP - when you couldn't hear anything in Popes Lane. The wind has a surprisingly big effect. Whether anybody pays close attention now, I don't know. It's important for ward councillors to engage because the professionals have different priorities - protection of attendees, prevention of crime, objective analysis of noise - but these are often not what upsets neighbours. These are more about litter, disruption of traffic/parking, noisy people heading for a station etc. |
