What a strange lot of grumbly posts. I do agree that councillors who do next to nothing are in the wrong, even for a token £11000pa, no pension, no golden anything. Perhaps a recall mechanism would be a good idea. But given that there is apparently zero pension means that even the new pay levels do not look at all generous to me. I've met three councillors quite often, Guy Lambert, Katherine Dunne and Tony Louki and all have impressed me with their dedication and hard work. My wife recently asked if I might ever want to be a councillor. I said "No way - pitiful pay, zero pension, lots of boring detail and a large body of local people predisposed to criticize everything you do and make false insinuations of dishonesty." So as far as I can see all this complaining is just about a modest belated catch-up based on an independent report. Please have a look at the riches bestowed on MPs, especially ministers and their chums. Some, eg Williamson, seem to have no knowledge or interest at all in their area yet still get showered with gifts, lordships etc over their disastrous careers. Mr "no experts" Gove seems to keep failing upwards. And did we get back our £40+ million wasted on the Garden Bridge by Johnson? One rule for them... I'll stick to helping out three local charities, with websites and photography. That seems much more rewarding, even if the pay and expenses are zero.
