| That's as much to do with the Thames as far as Teddington not having been dredged for 50 years as far as Fulham and the estuary silting up which is natural part of a rivers evolution. The reclamation of large areas of sea like the Zuider Zee and the draining of the Fens also plays a factor in water displacement. Sea levels are rising but natural flood plains have been built on or reclaimed for agriculture. Natural flood plains do kind of indicate how far a river can flood over thousands of years. Some have flood plains that have never been recorded as flooded in ancient or modern history others every 50 years or so and some every time it rains! But to protect developments of mankind, a second Barrier will be needed and certainly should be at the final design stage which should be for a worst case level and not as a stop gap. |
