I haven't specifically asked the question about black plastic but if I could remember how to post pictures here I would show one of a bale of plastic after processing in Southall Lane, which certainly includes black items. I'm assuming that the kerbside sorting regime LBH uses sidesteps problems. The relevant bits of the recycling truck are discharged into different bays at the centre and, as I understand it, subjected to only cursory inspection before being baled for  transport to recycling plants.
There are certain plastics that are not recyclable, or at least have to be dealt with separately. These include plant pots, plastic coat hangers and a lot of plastic toys and melamine which require higher temperatures (I think) and don't mix, and polystyrene which I think is not recyclable at all.
I learn that all this is imprecise - the bales of recycling will have some of 'the wrong stuff' but will be accepted by reprocessors if they are 'near enough'
I'd be happy to discuss with your daughter in Brentford, Jennifer if she/you PM's me or contacts via my council address.
