It is, of course, the culmination of what has for a long time been a cruel laugh at the expense of the overwhelming majority of local residents, but this doesn't surprise me in the least and for me simply demonstrates how loudly money speaks. Those whose property values will have been enhanced by the willingness of local "Labour" councillors to facilitate this outcome owe them a debt of gratitude, which using the ample time and influence at their disposal to lobby for these meaningless accolades will have gone some way towards repaying. Its purpose, I imagine, is to add a touch of plausibility to the "green initiative" charade which they will need to maintain during next year's local elections if a serious challenge emerges to them as a consequence of this shameful episode. Predictable, as will be the shameless way in which the councillors will inevitably wallow in this for all it is worth. |
