Dawn, Where do you get the figure '200 Frenchmen'? De Gaulle was anti-British because he was French,because he was marginalised from allied decision making whilst leading the free French in the UK and because we,necessarily,scuttled the French fleet in the mediterranean,killing about 1300 French sailors.I have been to the d-day landing beaches and at Arramonche,where my father landed,there is a huge memorial to the glory of De Gaulle,stating that he liberated the town. It was in fact,the first town liberated by Allied troops and De Gaulle was nowhere to be seen until 3 days later. DeGaulle also insisted for years that Britain would not be allowed to join the Common Market as he hated us so much. Never mind more than a million British lives lost defending their freedom. |
