The 65 route used to be the preferred route for Garage based crews and drivers for many many years in South West and west London. Not any more.

It suffers constant road works delays and traffic flow schemes and the job of driving has become one of the highest stress occupations for a poor salary compared to what it was 25 year ago.  Bus staff have become the poor relation of what was a holistic London Transport since it became LRT and subsequently TfL.

Ken Livingston reversed the decline, hugely improved the 65 speeding up the route to early 1980s timetables journey times, but since it has gone awry and been largely undone with timetabled journey times now even longer and slower than in the early 2000s

But despite poor money, it's the stress that is causing an exodus of good driver/operators and the fact that they are the ones who get all the flack for late running and woe betide any who tell it as it is and dare to complain about the created road hazards. Indeed even the bus companies are in an arm lock with TfL so nothing will be done.

Bottom line is local authorities and their Officers will not robustly challenge TfL and the Mayor of Londons policies. It risks their career prospects but the rug being pulled by elected management as well.

End result is the smoke and mirrors of rebranding bus routes and engineering decline.
