I remember my grandfather telling me that he always used the outside 'earth closet' (later replaced with a flushing toilet) with the door open (he had been entombed in a trench at Ypres) and saw Luftwaffe planes straffing the traffic on the Great West Road before bombs fell on and around the Pyrene factory (opposite the Firestone site).
