I really do not understand why the government would even consider hiking N.I. contributions rather than pay for care costs through increased taxes, only because the Tories have this thing about raising tax. Neither do I get why we don't pay N.I. right up until retirement, the current system is bonkers. A lot of people work beyond state pension age now, so why not keep paying your N.I.? There is a lot of money in that, a quick check today - between three of us we could have contributed another 7 years of contributions, which is a lot of money. As many pensioners pay income tax it would seem equitable  - after all N.I. has a ceiling which  benefits the higher earners. And please can we stop this nonsense about social care? A lot of people in care homes have some illness/disease which is not a social problem- it is an age related thing, to take dementia, it is a disease of the brain. We don't charge people with arthritis for new joints, why should dementia and other related conditions be any different? We must wake up to the fact we need more money to pay for these services, so let's make sure we ALL contribute according to our means.
