Dear Jim Many thanks for this - very interesting! I also looked at the link forwarded by fellow reader Jim Linwood that reports on research by Vic Rosewarne on the origins of Catherine Wheel Road. Seems there was a pub in (or close to) the former 'Catherine Wheel Yard' called... the Catherine Wheel. Bingo. I will also look out for news of the potential name change from 'road' to 'lane'. I just checked the definition of 'lane' and it is mostly used for narrow/ rural thoroughfares. I hope it does not change to that as part of the 'project' that Brentford High Street appears now to have become. Are we a project? We are losing bits of old Brentford fast enough without needlessly changing street names too. Best Angela |
