What a great question!
The sign of the Catherine Wheel derives comes from a 4th century Christian martyr, St. Catherine of Alexandria, who was reputedly killed by being broken on a wheel. This was a barbaric method of execution by which the victim was tied to a wheel and then had their limbs crushed.
I have no specific explanation of why our Catherine Wheel Road is so called but it used to be known as Catherine Wheel Yard. The use of the name "Blue Road" should be avoided! Watch out for a possible suggestion from Ballymore that it should be called Catherine Wheel Lane. |
