I know. We found out yesterday that two people we know (don't freak out, they both live far away and we haven't seen them for a long time) most probably have it but no one knows for sure, because no testing is available.

The real problem is that if next to no one is being tested, then the infection figure provided by the government is meaningless. People will see that it's a few thousand nationwide and assume that the risk is being blown out of proportion, when - in fact - the infection rate (grouping in asymptomatic carriers) is more likely to be in the hundreds of thousands, if not low millions.

The only way to get through is to assume that EVERYONE has it, and adjust our behaviour accordingly. Since people couldn't be trusted to do this on their own, the lockdown statement was necessary. This morning, Michael Gove suggested that this might be taken further: say hello to French-style self-certification and police/military enforcement.

All very grim, but the price paid for 'too little, too late'.
