I was not around in the days of CiP (or only as a resident focused on other things) so I don't know that story very well. Former councillor Andrew Dakers wrote at the time that problems were due to underfunding by successive administrations and my guess is there was plenty of politics involved when the Tories closed it down. But it's certainly not true to say 'the mess was offloaded to Carillion'. John Laing, by then owned by Henderson private Equity did what PE outfits do and flogged off the whole division for £65M and Carillion did what it did - took on debt to expand in what looks to an outsider like a giant Ponzi scheme. I will do a bit of digging back into CiP for any lessons to be learned, but I suspect Greenspace360 is a very different animal. |
