I was on site when Fullers own estates department was involved in digging out the cellar for the new Red Loin, when one of the labours suddenly disappeared from view. He had broken through into what was thought to be a well at the time, so what ever it was, it had to be professionally sealed up in case it was part of an old sewage system, but it was sure a deep vertical drop. The Labourer was lucky as the hole was only a foot wide so his rear end got stuck so we just pulled him back out again. According to the clerk of works, that well or large brick built drop was not on any of the site plans. In later life I wonder if it was a rain water run off as it had a river smell from rather than sewage. I am wondering if something like that was unearthed around by the Plough Pub and not seal up correctly? and the smell is seeping though |
