I went up to have a look around the other day - the first time I've really explored the area since the towers went up. It really reminded me of Docklands in the early nineties - very impressive visually but no indication of being a community. That's not to say that the flats are not occupied. Most of the balconies I saw gave an indication of the flat being someone's home it just felt a bit soulless.
It still is partly a building site but I think the same mistake is being made as previously with East London. Communities build up around communal places such as pubs, places of worship and shops which this development lacks. |
