Not forgetting it was highly industrial and a lot of ingredients for items manufactured were and are highly toxic, not known at the time of course! Even wallpaper and paper making used arsenic and cyanide But Brentford, a bit of Chiswick, Fulham and Wandsworth's banksides were really bad and to this day wonder just what is under the mud and the buildings that stand there now. The goods yard at Brentford Dock was noted for the transportation of a lot of nasties in both directions and clearing of brownfield site technology in the 1970s is not what it is now. That only moved up a notch or ten when the docklands was redeveloped. |
