There's seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about the number of Covid-19 deaths in the UK. Yes, we have a very high number of deaths, but then we have a large population (3rd in Europe, slightly behind France). Of 25 European countries with a population over two million (i.e. with a statistically relevant population and reliable reporting mechanism) we currently lie 10th in the number of deaths per 100,000 behind, inter alia: Belgium, Italy and most of eastern Europe.

In terms of infection we lie 13th behind, inter alia: Belgium, Italy, France, Switzerland and Spain.

In short, despite the recent surge in cases here we are around average for the whole of Europe and better than some countries who are only too quick to castigate the UK.

All statistics are courtesy of the World Health Organisation collated by John Hopkins University.
