At the same time, I'm not sure you can just transplant things from one country to another. I mean, suppose Hounslow Council went on a fact-finding mission to New York, carefully measured Yankee Baseball Stadium - down to every last hot dog stand, then came back and built an exact replica here in Brentford. Would 50,000 people then turn out each week to watch baseball here? No. I was interested in what we're doing wrong re: cycling in this country and found an interesting article in the Guardian - https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2017/sep/19/britains-1960s-cycling-revolution-flopped-stevenage - apparently Stevenage built a huge network of separated cycle paths in the 1960s (comparable to anything in Holland) - only to discover they're still only used for 3% of journeys to work :( |
