| I'll never get why people point the finger at LBH regarding Firestone. Admittedly I was only 1 at the time, and any personal knowledge has been accrued through reading, but as I understand it the issue was that the building was about to be formally listed, but there was a delay at the DoE (i.e. at government level, not local level) which left the building unlisted over the bank holiday weekend during which it was demolished. So the blame essentially lay at the feet of the DoE. The legislation at the time wasn't what it is today in terms of demolition and the need for prior approval even for demolition of unlisted buildings, but admittedly there are still cases of unscrupulous developers demolishing buildings without consent (e.g. a pub last year in Maida Vale). I'll openly confess that I do sometimes advise clients to use the powers available under the prior approval procedure to secure the demolition of an unlisted/unprotected building. I did it on a building in Chiswick which went completely under the radar (albeit an unattractive office block), unlike the Packhorse & Talbot or Pisarro's which didn't go under the radar (neither of which I was involved in). What I have done so in the case of Firestone ? - I genuinely can't say, because I would be expected to advise my clients of all lawful options, and at the time the demolition was lawful. I sincerely hope I'm never put in that position. |
