I have been very critical of this administration for many good reasons, but one positive to emerge from the recent reshuffle in my view was the appointment of Councillor Nisar Malik as the new Mayor. He has cited building community cohesion in the borough as one of his priorities and I think his efforts in this field over the coming year will lend credit to the local authority.
During the coalition administration of 2006-2010 the then Leader of the Council, Peter Thompson, personally led on Community Cohesion and I was proud to play a strong supporting role in that area. Councillor Malik was one of the few opposition (Labour) councillors who would frequently attend events and contribute positively. I personally found him very supportive. He is also a genuinely nice guy.
