That seems to confirm all that Anthony Waller had revealed. Especially the use of water for the engine yard. It may also explain why the Lateward road / Brook road end of St Pauls rec was never built on. The land undulates to that point and no doubt was boggy. The La Tewards did not bequeath the park until after Lateward road was built so it is possible it was too costly to drain the land. Hence it's donation - there's always a catch. It does explain what both the Lateward Road and Brook Road sites remained unbuilt on post war. The density of the area made infrastructure works difficult with nowhere to place installations. |
