There are places in libraries for Chartered Librarians and for Library Assistants with NVQs. Unfortunately staff development via the NVQ route was hindered when Level 4 which had been developed early on, was dropped through lack of take-up - without being given the time for those taking levels 2 and 3 to work through to Level 4 in sufficient numbers. There is a comparable but very complex route offered by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). I am not sure of the rate of take up in terms of provision for staff by public library services. Such on the job qualifications not only improve service but give staff something to take with them to improve their own careers. The dole queue is full of university grads these days! Hazel Dakers |
