The same could be said about the idea of reshaping cities around the motor car that held sway until about 30-40 years ago before being swept away on a tide of protest when, post-Westway, people realised what it meant (indeed it strikes me that there's a very good example right out front of the GW Quarter, too). The problem since is that we've not reconciled the addiction to driving with the desire to have cities without cars dominating, as the example of the GW Quarter indicates. Face it - no one's going to build you a car-friendly city in 2010, so why get bent out of shape when people don't build car-friendly developments? |
