On a personal level, I agree with the sentiments expressed by other posters. Unfortunately, on a professional level, planning policies at national level (PPG13), regional level (London Plan) and local level (Unitary Development Plans/Core Strategy Development Plan Documents) all now encourage developments to provide little car parking. The policies do set standards, but whereas several years ago those standards were 'minimum', they are now 'maximum'. And given any planning application has to be assessed against development plans, there isn't much hope for a Council to refuse a planning application on grounds of insufficient parking provision. I don't totally agree though that people with cars always move into such developments - I myself would never live in a place which didn't have a garage/allocated off-street parking space (I have one allocated underground parking space which I use myself) and whilst hunting for a lodger to live in my spare bedroom I have often had potential occupants turn the room down solely because they would only be able to park their car on surrounding streets possibly some distance from the flat. |
