That may be simplistic but it really is a direct hit on the nailhead. Of course, most people (myself included) want to park at least within eyeshot of one's cars because of the vandalism and crime that befalls property, likewise most van and working vehicles need to have a close eye kept on them. The best solution I've experienced (one that is very common in Europe but true to form, unheard of in this rapidly declining nation) are underground car parks that are divided between public and community use. They have very low rates( often just the permit fee) and are always just a few mins from homes. They are often built over railway cuttings, under parks in fact often in the most unusual places and are almost invisible. Somehow, countries less wealthy than this can manage public works that directly benefit residents. They take most vehicles off the streets and enable quiet small streets to return to places where children can play and neighbours can chat. This is because unlike the british who just moan about the decline of quality of life, breakdown of communities and getting ripped off, Europeans acted as it became noticeable and did something about it. If you look at Brentford, Chiswick and many similar older areas, parking is woefully inadequate and revenues from CPZs like the congestion charge go mainly to operating companies rathera back to schemes to enable a long term solutions where needed. |
