Will history remember that this was the location where lots of staff, with the knowledge of supervisors and the trades Union, were stealing cash every day for years..when it should have been handed in (to GPO coffers.)

This was the place that coin boxes from London's phoneboxes were taken..to be opened up, the coins counted and bagged and handed over. Staff however had other ideas.  They had linen bank coin bags stitched into their trousers, and as they counted coins on the table in front of them..most of the 50p s were transferred into their pockets!!

At the end of each day, the staff would stagger out of the building with their bullion bags dangling down their legs. Some might have gone home at lunchtime too!!

Maybe a hundred thousand pounds and more was taken!

The Police found out what was going on, and the Union had warned everyone that a raid from the law was imminent.  Could they stop their greedy activities?. No! On the day of the raid loads of staff were caught red handed..including supervisors..and some 20-30 finished up in Court. Houses in Spain had been purchased.etc etc etc.

It will be a blessing if the building is demolished..to help eradicate the memory of these 1970's (?) happenings.
