I'm afraid it's hard to deny the increase in vans, mysterious or otherwise, and the fact of the matter remains that it's happened over the last six to eight months. I'm not against people who occasionally use vans and occasionally bring them home - fine. Live and let live. But this is not occasional, it's all the time. And because I find it difficult to believe that a whole bunch of my neighbours have all decided to invest in vans recently, there must be another explanation for it. I think it's likely, as you suggest, that the vans are second vehicles and the owners don't want to buy second permits. So they go to one of the last remaining areas with 'free' parking. A CPZ will - at the least - act as a deterrent to these people, freeing up some of the spaces for residents, no matter how many cars they have. (Three cars AND a van? Seems a little extreme. More vehicles than bedrooms.) And yes, back to the old issue of payment. The charge appears to be £60 for the first vehicle, and £80 for a second vehicle. That's (in total) £140 - just over £10 a month. No - I don't want to pay it, but if it improves my quality of life, then I will. Back to the people with three cars and a van - if they can afford the road tax, they can afford the permits. |
