Phil

Only the once, he had 3 small children and a mortgage and MP pay in those days was at most £1,750 (I forget when it reached those dizzy heights, possibly only in the mid 1960s, so it might have been less still then), and he was worried he wouldn't be well enough off on just that, with school fees.

It was also fairly likely that 1960 or whenever would be no more fruitful (in the event the 1959 election was pretty miuch a landslide and it took boudary changes to make the seat winnable by Michael Barnes in either 1964 or 1966, the latter I think.

To rememmber this election, you would have to be in your late 60s really at a minimum. I only remember it because it was my father involved (riding on the back of his bike ss he cycled to canvass a housing estate on the A316), and similar.

Laddie Lucas, the Conservative sitting member, was a Battle of Britain ace and married the sister of Douglas Bader's first wife Thelma. Both Bader and he were pretty good golfers. Lucas' father designed Sandwich golf course and he was born in the clubhouse! Later his knowledge of the course paid off when he had to ditch his Spitfire and did so on a fairway close to the clubhouse - which must have taken some doing.

Which probably didn't sweeten the pill of losing to him much.

Dan
