| Expert? Hmm. Anyway, Jim is correct to say that the sign is in storage at Gunnersbury, awaiting...well, no-one is really sure what, although the hope remains that it can be rebuilt. The mechanism is too vintage to be rebuilt, the bulbs aren't made anymore - very difficult. A couple of years ago a scheme was worked up which would allow a new sign, an exact replica, to be built on a site to the West of the filling station on the corner of the GWR and S Ealing Rd. Unfortunately the owners haven't yet progressed with the scheme that would allow this to happen, so there's no new sign. Some may find it a little unusual that efforts were made to rebuild the sign when, generally, planning applications for ads are frowned upon. It was a good piece of local history, and I for one miss it. |
