As I said, 3 speeding offences in 55 years driving is not bad. I now try to observe limits at all times and anybody who drives around London knows that people who obey limits are rare, particularly in 20mph limit areas. More common than the ones that honour boxes supposedly set aside for cycles.
It's not me saying that Hounslow roads are the best in London it's independent assessors. We live in the 14th year of reduced saving on things seen by central government as not important: one of these (amongst many things) is road surfaces. If you read motoring magazines they are frequently say they don't know how a car drives until they have tested it on UK roads. When we were young, we said the opposite.
I don't cycle much outside of London but I was shocked by roads in Epsom where I drove someone a little while ago. They are awful.
I agree country lanes are very difficult for cycling. For a while I worked for the Foreign Office in Hanslope Park in Northants and quite a lot of people cycled there down twisty B roads with high hedges. Scary.
Twickenham road has been very hard to negotiate for at least 10 years - I remember how frustrating it was before the 2015 election when I was driving Ruth Cadbury about regularly.
The problem is not cycle lanes or cyclists. It is because there is too much traffic for the capacity of the road network.
These days I am a very rare contributor to that problem.
