Clearly Gareth Southgate didn’t see enough about Ivan to give him even a cameo when he was called up to the squad, though that’s not uncommon at international even. Most coaches close to a tournament prefer tried and trusted players. Gazza almost missed out on selection in 1990 because Bobby Robson wasn’t sure he would fit in to the system. Toney has undoubted talent. Newcastle’s youth and under-23 coaches really rated him. Peter Beardsley described him as a gem, so the decision to move him on was clearly a Mike Ashley one to cash in on a young asset. Still, he’ll be nice and fresh once he’s served his ban. |
