Oddly enough my A Level certificates which I had to dig out over the weekend have clearly got 'Brentford in the County of Middlesex' on them and that was the early 1980s.

GSK used Brentford, Middlesex, England on products purchased while abroad.

Brentford, does not have a true London Postcode, odd as Hanwell protrudes further west yet has a London Postcode.

The river though remains referred to as the Surrey Bank and the Middlesex Bank all the way from Westminster.

But Hanwell is also often still referred to as Hanwell, Middlesex. As are Greenford and Southall.  Hayes, Middx., is synonymous with EMI products worldwide, rather like those of Beechams and Trico and a few other once household names now long gone from here.

Brentford did not get a postcode ( It would have been W4 as B comes before C) it would have had it not been that the principal county court of Middlesex was considered to be in Brentford. Although going further back, after Westminsters' incorporation as a City a new county town charter was never administered officially.

But Brentford was a Key industrial and bridgehead and nearest to Westminster which was rather convenient administratively. Which seems to explain why in a pragmatic way.
