I was speaking to a retired consultant anesthetist friend yesterday who had sat on a committee to consider the use of masks to control infection. He referred to a meta study that showed there was no evidence of their efficacy.
This is borne out by the WHO current advice here:

https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public/when-and-how-to-use-masks

My observations are that many people fiddle about with their masks, potentially moving pathogens from their hands into contact with their face.  I've seen people wear them around the neck and pull them up on entering a shop - pointless.

This latest government gimmick seems to be pandering to the corona phobia they have unleashed and don't know how to control.  It is a gross infringement of our liberties.

Of course it may be part of a cunning plan to stimulate rebellion by introducing ludicrous measures that many will ignore.

Distancing is now officially old hat following yesterday's protest rally, march and riots in central London - promoted by media and attended by MPs.

The best defense against pathogens is good hygiene, avoiding hugging strangers, and boosting your immune system with fresh air, exercise, sunshine and a good diet.
