At last we seem to have an answer to the origin of the name. I asked at the Museum of Water and Steam about the possibility of the early water pumps being nicknamed "green dragons" but that was not the case. A volunteer at the museum then remembered that he had read about the topic in a book called "Ealing Walkabout", written by Kate McEwan and published in 1983. In her book, which includes a chapter about Brentford, she writes: "Green Dragon Lane takes its name from a 17th century inn and used to extend northwards along the line taken by Lionel Road until its course was altered by the building of the London and South Western Railway in the 1840s". I haven't been able to find any other references to an inn called The Green Dragon. I guess that it may have been anywhere along the length of the old Green Dragon Lane, perhaps at its northern end in Ealing. Thanks John and Anne for your interest in this topic! |
